How to split household costs fairly
Updated: 2026-10-18 · By Andrei and Nada Argyo, creators of SwissBudget+ in Lucerne.
A shared budget works best when everyone can see what was paid and what remains to settle. Agree on the method before the first bill arrives.
Choose what is shared
List shared costs such as rent, utilities, groceries and insurance. Decide which purchases stay personal, and how you will handle irregular bills.
Agree on a split
Equal shares are simple; an income-based split may fit some households better. Pick a rule together and write down any exceptions.
Keep a clear record
SwissBudget+ household shares show who paid and who owes whom. Enter each shared expense consistently, then review the balance together.
